SINTRA DE MOUNTAIN OF THE MOON

(2 days)

Highlights: Sintra, Cascais, Estoril, Palaces, Nature, UNESCO Heritage Sites

Sintra is the mountain of the moon, a crown of mist and mystery, where palaces rise like dreams, castles guard legends, and forests hide secrets. It is the “Garden of Eden,” as Lord Byron called it, the inspiration of kings, princesses, and poets, the sweetness of eternal cheesecakes and pasteries kept secret since ancient times. Sintra is not visited: it is experienced as a spell that never breaks.

Sintra is the place where the earth dreams of the sky. It is the mountain of the moon, shrouded in mist and mystery, where palaces appear like mirages and legends hide among enchanted forests. Lord Byron called it “Glorious Garden of Eden,” and those who arrive immediately sense this splendor: a kingdom of kings and princesses, of poets and travelers, of pasteries whose recipies that have been preserved for centuries and Travesseiros (the moste exquisite of them) that have sweetened family secrets since ancient times.

In the heart of the mountains rises the Pena Palace, with its vibrant colors and towers that seem to have come from a dream. It is a romantic palace that crowns the mountain, built to be fantasy, to prove that the imaginary can be real. There, every tile and every tower tells a story of enchanted kingdoms and impossible loves.

Further down, the Sintra National Palace, with its imposing conical chimneys, is a living testament to the Portuguese monarchy. It was the home of kings and queens, the scene of intrigues, dinners, and confessions. It is said that King John I celebrated his union with Philippa of Lancaster there, and that many princesses dreamed of overseas destinations there.

The Moorish Castle holds the oldest memory. Within walls that dominate the landscape, battles of reconquest, stories of fidelity and resistance echo. In the silence of the stones, the shadow of knights can be felt, and in the towers, the wind tells legends that merge with the truth.

Sintra is also a land of retreat and inspiration. Lord Byron found here the romantic paradise of his poetry, the iconic Hans Christian Andersen lost himself in its woods, writing about the magic that seemed real, and the very Portuguese Eça de Queirós described the landscapes for him with his irony as pen. Sintra is a land that has always offered refuge to those who came in search of beauty and mystery.

Among palaces and forests, Sintra’s sweets and its Colares rare wines are another treasure. The queijadas, simple yet timeless, retain notions of convent and tradition. The Travesseiros, created by the Cunha family since 1940, are a closely guarded mystery, made of delicate puff pastry and a sweet filling, the formula known only to select hands and the recipie is protected as secret by national law. With each bite, accompanied by the sweet and saline wine made from grapes from the Colares region, the traveler tastes not only the sweetness, but also the history and secrets of the town and the mountain that conquers the moon.

In its narrow streets, with white houses and hidden gardens, Sintra reveals a soul made of contrasts: the weight of history and the lightness of imagination, the austerity of granite and the delicacy of mist. Every murmuring fountain, every arch or overlook, holds a promise of enchantment.

Sintra is not just a place: it is a state of mind. It is the Mountain of the Moon, where time seems suspended, where kings and poets meet, where the traveler loses and finds themselves again. Those who visit discover that Sintra is not to be seen, but to be dreamed of, like an eternal fairy tale.
